FLEET sales continued their inexorable rise last month, setting a new June record and meaning fleet registrations have been at record levels for 18 of the last 21 months.

In a relatively low-key month fleet sales were 1.6% up on June 1997 at 85,745 (84,420) in a total new car market 11.9% ahead of June last year at 169,789 (151,620). And with fleet sales up year-on-year for each month of 1998 - now totalling 557,359 (1997: 522,322) - 1998 fleet sales will almost certainly break last year's record of 1,018,491 units. Total new car registrations for the first six months now stand at 1,136,892 (1997: 1,054,715).

Last month fleet sales accounted for 50.5% of the total new car market, with Ford leading the way with 19.210 registrations - 3.6% down on June 1997's total of 19,928. The Mondeo was the best-selling fleet car despite an 8.8% year-on-year drop in fleet registrations to 7,099, but sales of the Escort, the second best-selling fleet car, were up 8.2% at 6,008.
