AUDI is to launch a range-topping version of the A3, with the S3 quattro set to join its S4 quattro and S8 quattro counterparts in offering company car drivers a sporting option. Full pricing and specification details on the S3 quattro will be announced closer to the autumn 1999 launch date.

However, Audi says it will have a turbocharged 1.8-litre, four-cylinder engine which will deliver 210bhp at 5,800rpm and 199lb-ft of torque from 2,100-5,000rpm. The car has a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds, a top speed of 148mph and returns fuel consumption of 31mpg on the combined cycle. With permanent four-wheel-drive and a six-speed gearbox, the sporting nature of the S3 quattro is underlined by its lowered sports suspension. Standard specification will include ABS, twin front airbags and front side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and front seatbelt force limiters, alloy wheels, Recaro sports seats and three-spoke steering wheel.
