SUBARU has slashed the price of the new 2.5-litre 156bhp Legacy GX saloon by more than £1,000. On sale at the end of this month the new model has been reduced to £17,995 on-the-road, a £1,305 reduction on the outgoing model, which Subaru says gives it an extremely competitive price in the executive sector.

A Subaru spokesman said: 'This pricing realignment is seen as the ideal way to make the Legacy's presence felt in the executive sector. The reduction, with a high level of specification, makes the car a very attractive proposition.' Subaru says the new price of the Legacy makes it more than £1,700 cheaper than the BMW 318i, £4,000 cheaper than the Audi A4 2.4 and £1,500 cheaper than a Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Sport.

Standard equipment on the new model includes the all-wheel-drive system, twin airbags, ABS, 16in alloy wheels, fog lamps, four electric windows, immobiliser and remote central locking. There is the same £1,305 price drop for the 'luxury pack' model at £21,495 on the road, with extra specification including an automatic transmission, climate control, side airbags and full leather trim. The new Legacy will make its UK debut at this year's Fleet Show, which opens for three days on April 27 at the NEC in Birmingham.
