SATURDAY is the most costly day of the week on which to have an accident, Wednesday has the highest number of prangs, and criminals start their working week on a Monday, according to research by VELO Motor Accident Management. Statistics based on data from almost 55,000 insurance claims revealed that Monday to Friday showed a similar number of incidents occurring, with significantly less at the weekends. The highest number of incidents, around 16%, were recorded on Wednesdays. However, the average cost of incidents was higher on a Saturday than any other day, possibly because, due to reduced traffic on the roads, cars travel at a higher average speed.

In contrast VELO found the average cost of each incident was considerably lower on a Sunday - £518 compared with £818 on a Saturday. Looking at car crime by day of the week, VELO discovered that car crime incidents were most prevalent on Monday. The lowest occurrence was at the weekends. The average cost of car crime was far greater on Tuesdays, even though fewer crimes were committed then than any other weekday. At £723 per incident, this was over £120 more than the average costs on Thursdays (£601) and over £200 more than the lowest average cost, on Fridays (£522).
