THE Mitsubishi Motors GDI Challenge saw winner Michael Lennox, financial director of London chartered surveyor Weatherall, Green & Smith, achieve an average 57.8mpg over a 300-mile route from the south east of England via Rouen to Le Touquet in France.

Driving a 2.4-litre Galant, 1.8 Carisma and 1.8 Space Star each powered by the manufacturer's gasoline direct injection petrol engine, Lennox, who is in charge of the company's 210-strong fleet, beat five other contestants. The overall average fuel consumption for all six drivers was 51.3mpg. He won £1,000 which he donated to St John's Hospice (Sue Ryder) in Moggerhanger, Bedfordshire.
