THE second generation 3-series Compact makes its world debut alongside two other new BMWs at the Geneva International Motor Show next week. The new Compact which will go on sale in the UK in August and has the same wheelbase as the 3-series saloon, but is 21cm shorter.

There will be two models available - the 316ti, using a four-cylinder engine built at BMW's new plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham, and the 325ti, powered by a 192bhp six-cylinder. Prices will be announced closer to their launch. Also on show for the first time will be a 3.0-litre diesel version of the X5 sport utility vehicle, and the M3 with a sequential F1-style gearshift.
