FSI means more power, more dynamic performance, more driving pleasure and crucially for the cost conscious fleet decision maker, all this for less fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

The FSI engine found today in the A2 and newly launched in the A4 uses technology premiered in the all-conquering R8 Le Mans cars with Audi's revolutionary new direct fuel injection system making it possible for an increase engine power while cutting fuel consumption.

The secret of FSI is in its revolutionary direct injection technology. In contrast to conventional intake manifold injection, FSI engines inject fuel directly into the combustion chambers. FSI also dispenses with the throttle plate, increasing power output while reducing fuel consumption.

The engine operates in two modes to minimise consumption. When a high power output is needed, the electronics select the normal operating mode for conventional direct injection engines. Even in this mode the FSI engine holds an advantage over less advanced petrol units in that it leaves no fuel unburned – the mixture is completely vaporised in the combustion chamber for greater efficiency.

At normal cruising speeds the engine switches to stratified mode where air is directed extremely accurately at the spark plug, rather than throughout the rest of the cylinder as is traditional.

A catalytic converter also stores harmful emissions before sending them back into the combustion chamber to be converted into harmless gases.

The FSI engine is designed to run highly efficiently on ultra low sulphur unleaded petrol, but for the ultimate 'lean burn' performance, sulphur free fuel is recommended which will be introduced across the UK in 2003.

And thanks to considerably reduced carbon dioxide emissions, FSI technology sees a petrol engine grabbing the headlines back from diesel cars which have up until now been seen as the number one choice for the tax conscious fleet manager.

For example, CO2 emissions for the 2.0-litre version are 170g/km. This is an impressive 20g/km less than the standard 2.0-litre engine and places the FSI-powered Audis in a sector beating 16% benefit-in-kind tax band in 2002/03.

FSI engines are available in the Audi A2 1.6 and A4 2.0-litre Manual and Sport Manual in saloon and Avant body styles.

In the A2 the new FSI unit provides a significant performance advantage over A2 1.4, yet fuel consumption and emissions are lower.

By combining sophisticated new direct petrol injection technology with advanced lightweight aluminium construction, Audi has now created an even more exceptionally efficient version of its pioneering A2 variable compact. The A2 FSI was launched in the UK in September. The new A2 1.6 FSI will cost £13,895 OTR in standard form, rising to £14,895 OTR for the 1.6 FSI Sport.

A new four-cylinder, 1.6-litre petrol engine, directly fuel injected by a new FSI injection system provides the A2 1.6 FSI with 110bhp.

It enables a 0-62mph time of 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 126mph, covering up to 47.9 miles per gallon in the combined cycle, and emits 142g/km of CO2 (A2 1.4: 75bhp/46.3mpg/144g/km), ensuring that it remains with its 1.4 counterparts in the lowest taxation bracket for business users (15 per cent).

In the A4 the 2.0-litre FSI engine is available in Manual, Sport Manual and SE Manual derivatives costing £19,565, £20,465 and £20,175 on-the-road respectively.

The 150bhp engine gives the A4 FSI a 0-62mph sprint time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 136mph and 39.7mpg in the combined cycle.

Prices for the A4 Avant 2.0 FSI are £20,695 for the Manual, £21,305 for the SE Manual and £21,595 for the Manual Sport.

Top speed is 134mph, 0-62mph time is 9.9 seconds and the A4 Avant FSI returns 39.7mpg in the combined cycle.
