FLEETS will have to wait until at least May this year before they know how Government will act on proposals for a 'get tough' policy on company car driver safety.

Lord Falconer of Thoroton revealed details of progress in considering the report of the Work-related Road Safety Task Group in the House of Lords last week.

The WRRSTG report is currently being considered by the Health and Safety Executive and recommends key initiatives to improve safety, including extending health and safety rules from the workplace to the company car.

Lord Falconer told the Lords: 'We have asked the HSE to consider the recommendations of the task group and its resource implications and to report to ministers in May.

'We will need to consider that advice carefully, and part of our considerations will, of course, include how best to ensure that employers address at-work road safety issues.'
