VAUXHALL Rental, the car and van rental division of Vauxhall Motors, is introducing a new online reservation system in a bid to take on the major daily rental operators.

The new system goes live at 150 Vauxhall dealer-based daily rental operators from September 1, co-ordinated from the firm's head office at Griffin House, Luton. The launch follows a two-year development programme, including a nine-month trial at 10 dealerships throughout the UK.

Its installation – through an internet-based Virtual Private Network that will also deliver other Vauxhall programmes online to its network of 500 dealers – will provide booking, confirmation and invoicing, plus the firm claims there will be a zero error rate on invoicing and greater management reporting.

All 5,000 Vauxhall rental vehicles for hire nationally through the rental network will be held within a central database, to offer an immediate snapshot of availability.

Currently, there are about 110 Vauxhall dealers offering rental services from main sites and another 40 from satellite sites, with the intention to grow the network to 200 dealers – 150 main and 50 satellites – by the end of this year.

A regional dealer recruitment roadshow will roll out through July and August in six regions – London and the South East, the South West and Wales, the Midlands North and Midlands South, the North and Scotland.

The Vauxhall rental online central reservation system will be operated by a team of 10, along with a five-strong field-based dealer advisory team.

General manager Fred Stamp said: 'For the first time, Vauxhall rental will be able to offer customers consistent levels of service and standards through all our rental outlets, turning in effect what is currently a dealer-based rental programme into a national network capable of effectively competing with the major rental operators.'
