Owners until now could convert their Multipla to run on gas as an aftersales option but the new LPG version, called Gpower and with a petrol and LPG engine, is manufactured directly at Fiat's Arese factory in Italy and sold through its normal sales network on the Continent – the bi-fuel car will not be sold in the UK.
Fiat claims that the 'widespread preconception' that LPG systems are dangerous is 'a myth'.
'The laws governing tank, pipe, valve and device construction are actually very strict,' it said. 'The Fiat Multipla is also protected by a fire prevention system (FPS) that protects the LPG system as well as the petrol system.
'One of its main components is an inertia switch that instantly cuts off the LPG flow in the case of an accident by closing the three solenoids on the tank and in the engine bay.'
The manufacturer added that the strength of the tank has also been tested.
'And there's more,' it said, 'the LPG on the Multipla is equipped with the same diagnostic system present on all group vehicles and can thus be serviced in any official Fiat service outlet. Because they are produced on a normal assembly line, LPG Multiplas are also subject to all standard production process checks.'
The manufacturer said the choice of LPG does not affect the Fiat Multipla's load space in any way as the tank, of one or two cylinders, is positioned under the floor outside the passenger compartment. It adds that this allows the owner to benefit from a higher fuel capacity, increasing to 350km on a single tank and 620km with the double tank.
The gas is not vaporised but injected into the engine in its liquid state. The four injectors are specially designed for fuel, bringing benefits in terms of handling and performance, Fiat said.
Fiat said the car offers environmental as well as financial benefits.
'For example,' it said, 'LPG - with methane - is the most economical fuel on the market in Italy. It costs about half as much as petrol. It is not burdened by excess taxation either, because gas conversions are not liable to tax.'
