The Signum, fitted with Vauxhall's new 2.2-litre direct injection petrol engine, won the family car award with 79 points from a possible 90.
A spokesman from the FIA Foundation, said: 'No stylised procedure fully reflects the environmental impact of a car in the wide variety of driving behaviours.
'However, cars that perform well in these tests provide less environmental impact than cars which perform less well.'
The EcoTest tested 113 vehicles in the mini, small, compact, mid, upper and luxury car groups.
