A FLEET of specially converted vans is to transport dogs and their handlers around for the Defence Animal Centre.

The centre has ordered the new fleet of Ford Transit vans from Lex Defence White Fleet, which provides military fleet support across the UK.

A Lex Defence spokesman said: 'Ten four-cage, six-people dog vans will primarily be used for transporting dogs and handlers to the training area, while seven six-cage, three-people dog vans will be used for collecting dogs from as far away as Germany.'

The vans have adapted kennels, removable floors and emergency exits for quick release of the dogs.

The RAF has also ordered a fleet of six-cage dog vans.
