Central Networks' fleet operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, but vehicles must also be capable of carrying 800kgs of equipment, while towing 3,000kgs.
After examining products from six manufacturers, the firm opted for Nissan, claiming the Navara pick-up was the only vehicle that could match the demanding requirements. It has ordered 47 King Cab pick-ups, which have been heavily adapted for the job.
Central Networks used Nissan's Special Vehicle Service that brings together a wide range of specialist vehicle services under one umbrella. Nissan worked with ATT Papworth and van racking specialist Edstrom to ensure the vehicles were built to Central Networks' standards.
Each vehicle has been kitted out with racking, shelving and towbars for transporting generators.
The vehicles will be run over four years and will cover about 20,000 miles per annum.
Central Networks is part of E. ON, the second largest energy supplier in the UK.
James Norris, Central Networks' restoration contracts manager, said: 'You can liken our job to that of the AA as our team of restoration craftsmen have to respond to power-related supply problems when householders' electricity goes off.'
