Fleet sales dominate August market

FLEET sales led the way for new car registrations in August, taking more than 50% of the market and showing a year-on-year increase of 2.3%.

New car registrations fell overall in August compared with 2003 and all eyes are now focused on the September market as an indicator of this year’s expected total new car registrations. The total market in August dipped by 4.9% to 84,996 units, although the year to date figure is still ahead of 2003 by 1%.

The Ford Focus continued its run as the best-selling car, but the Citroen Xsara and Vauxhall Zafira appeared in the top 10 for the first time in August.

Diesel registrations posted a 47th consecutive month of growth in August, 1.6% higher than August 2003 and taking a 32% share of the market.
