Sector by sector – large panel vans THE large panel van market is one of the most active sectors in the UK commercial vehicle business. In the last decade sales of 2.8-6.5 tonne vans have more than doubled, from 58,000 in 1994 to over 141,000 last year.

Think about that for a minute, more than 141,000 big vans were sold in the UK last year, and 42,000 of them had a Ford badge on the front. Those are big numbers. The reasons? Well, there is a slight move away from 7.5 tonne trucks due to licensing changes and the fact that a van is seen as less of a ‘heavy vehicle’ for domestic deliveries. Internet sales and supermarket deliveries have also boosted the van market.

But the main reason is that it is just so easy to go out and get a van for your business these days. Fleet sales are dominant, thanks to the growth of contract hire and other vehicle funding packages.

And for many trade customers that has opened a door to commercial vehicles that was just never available before.

That said, buyers are more aware of what is available and are choosing their vehicle specifications with care. But what a choice they are given. Engines, load volumes, fuels, lengths, heights and wheelbases, if you can’t find a vehicle to suit your exact operational needs here, then you really aren’t looking for a large van at all.

Citroen Relay

CITROEN’S Relay van range, as with the firm’s smaller commercial vehicles, is built in co-operation with Sevel partners Peugeot and Fiat. All three vans had a mid-life facelift a couple of years ago, with the Relay getting a wider bonnet with bolder Citroen chevrons in the grille.

There are new headlamps too and inside the van has a revised dash and new seats.

You still get a choice of three wheelbases, two roof heights and payloads from 1,100-1,770kg.

Citroen has improved the standard specification of the vans a bit, with goodies like electric windows, a height adjustable reach and rake driver’s seat with folding armrest and a stereo radio-cassette. It is disappointing though to see that a driver’s airbag is optional as is ABS braking. Surely in this day and age both should be standard on vans of this size.

Fiat Ducato

A FAMILIAR story unfolds at Fiat, with the Ducato range sharing much with Citroen’s Relay and the Peugeot Boxer. There are the same choice of engines, three roof heights, three wheelbases and a variety of load volumes from 7.5-14cubic metres.

Fiat does have some interesting electronic toys on offer though, including the firm’s Connect telematic information system. Working through a large satellite navigation screen on top of the dash, Connect provides a range of call centre services to assist the driver. The system also ties into a GSM phone and a radio with CD player for the full infotainment package.

Unfortunately, as with both Sevel partners, ABS and a driver’s airbag are both options on the Fiat vans.

If the basic panel van doesn’t suit your operation you can opt for a chassis cab on a choice of four wheelbases and a double crew cab option on the longest chassis.

There is also a Combi window van and a long wheelbase minibus chassis on offer.

Ford Transit

FORD’S evergreen Transit is, of course, synonymous with this sector of the market. It will come as no surprise then to see that Transit will be celebrating 40 years in the business this year, which will undoubtedly signal a few special deals.

There have certainly been some changes over that time, but Transit has always managed to hang on to an enviable share of the sector in the UK. Even now, some years into the current Transit’s evolution, the van has something that no other product on the market can offer.

While Mercedes, VW and Iveco extol the virtues of rear wheel drive, and Renault, Vauxhall and the Sevel trio are pushing the low floor offered by front wheel drive, Ford’s Transit is able to cover all the bases.

That’s because you can have virtually any Transit model, all wheelbases, roof heights and volumes bar the Jumbo, with a choice of front or rear wheel drive. Front drivers are powered by a 2.0-litre diesel while the rear driven vans have a 2.4-litre, but power levels in the mid-ground are pretty much the same from both engines.

Some vans have a more car-like driving experience, some have more powerful engines, some are quieter or more comfortable. But as a complete package, Transit really is a van for every eventuality.

Iveco Daily

IVECO’S Daily van range has long been a favourite on the Continent, but took some time to get going here.

Originally only available in the UK above 3.5 tonnes, as part of the firm’s agreement with ex-partner Ford, Iveco now sells the full Daily line-up here.

And it sells it well. Last year in a market that grew by more than 20%, Iveco’s van sales shot up by more than 32%. Daily has very much arrived as a main player in the market. It’s not hard to see why, with a vast choice of body shapes and sizes and four strong engines to power it, Daily really does have something for everyone. We’re talking about load area volumes of 7-17cu m – that’s a truck by any other name surely?

And that’s an important point to remember. Though part of the giant Fiat group of companies, Iveco is primarily a truck builder, and if you buy a Daily van, you get truck levels of back-up. After hours servicing? No problem. Roadside assistance? It’s taken care of. For fleets that can ill afford downtime, that has to be an important consideration.

Add to that the fact that you can also buy your Daily as a chassis cab, to fit a huge variety of bodies, or indeed pick from a range of ready built Drive Away vehicles, and it’s easy to see why sales are on the up.
