Election date set

Prime Minister Tony Blair today announced a general election for Thursday, May 5.

He had been expected to make the announcement yesterday, but delayed it because of the death of Pope John Paul II.

The announcement triggers a four-week election campaign.

Several opinion polls published today showed Labour giving ground slightly to the Conservatives, although still holding a lead of between 2 and 5 percentage points.
