A MAJOR focus on tyre management has reaped savings worth £50,000 over two years for a Scottish authority.

Angus Council operates a fleet of 370 commercial vehicles, ranging from refuse collection vehicles to road sweepers, and launched a tyre policy in conjunction with Michelin and ATS Euromaster.

The policy sees a technician from ATS working permanently for the council, travelling between its four depots to carry out tyre maintenance for the fleet.

Fleet service manager Willie Whyte said: ‘Two years ago, we stepped up our focus on tyre maintenance, with more regular pressure checks and the adoption of a wheel torque procedure policy.

‘The results speak for themselves and in the first years we reduced our overall tyre bill by £25,000, followed by £31,000 over the last 12 months. This represents a substantial reduction in expenditure on tyres.’
