A SPEED camera on the M4 in Wales is being removed – because it is making drivers slow down too much.

The Welsh Assembly has decided to take it down the camera, at junction 41 westbound at Port Talbot, because it is causing congestion. It will be replaced with electronic 50mph signs that show drivers’ speed but do not record details.

Motorists braking for the camera have been blamed for causing tailbacks of up to five miles.

Paul Smith, of road safety campaign Safe Speed, applauded the move, saying it represented the first substantial acknowledgment that cameras could have side effects.
