TRANSPORT Secretary Alistair Darling has announced details of a car sharing lane for a Yorkshire motorway.

The one-mile lane, planned for junction 26 of the M606/M62, will be operational by 2007.

Studies by the Highways Agency show that at peak times, about 84% of vehicles passing the site do not carry passengers.

A recent survey by Privilege Insurance claims that motorists carrying passengers are half as likely to be involved in an accident than those who are driving on their own (Fleet NewsNet, January 12).
