Tony Whitehorn, managing director, Hyundai

Tony Whitehorn joined Hyundai as managing director last November. He has more than 24 years’ experience in the motor industry, in sales, marketing and aftersales. Fleet NewsNet catches up with him six months into his role.

What has been the highlight of the past six months?
The launch of the New Santa Fe was a milestone in the company’s history in the UK. It was more than just a model launch, it signalled a step change in the company’s product development strategy. This car generated instant appeal and set the marque as a quality manufacturer.

What challenges/obstacles have you faced so far?
The distribution of Hyundai vehicles in the UK was bought by Hyundai Motor Corporation in July 2005. With any company takeover, there are challenges. However, all the text books say that the biggest challenge will be the ‘culture change’ and they are right.

What does a day as Hyundai’s managing director involve?
Everybody says ‘no day is the same’ and I agree with this although reviewing the daily sales performance is always a priority.
