A EUROPEAN Union-supported research project is designing car sensor equipment to help motorists avoid accidents at junctions and intersections – the location of 35% to 40% of all traffic accidents in Europe and 70% of fatal crashes, according to the European Commission.

The Intersafe project is developing advanced sensors and communications between vehicles and road infrastructure.

For instance, one application involves a right-of-way warning, telling a driver to stop for moving traffic using green, yellow and red lights, which if ignored generate an audio alarm.
