FINLAND has been told by the European Commission to scrap a law concerning registration fees for cars.

Drivers with vehicles in Finland for more than a week have to secure Finnish registration, at the full fee rate, even if a car is legally registered elsewhere in the European Union (EU).

Brussels has claimed this rule is ‘an obstacle to the freedom to provide services’.

A statement said: ‘It impedes leasing companies established in other member states from offering their services to persons resident in Finland.’

The commission says European Court of Justice precedents have established that such registration deadlines must be reasonable enough to prevent leasing services being illegally hampered.
