Dermot Coughlan
Transport manager, Kelly Group

  • What’s your biggest bugbear as a fleet manager?

Reducing parking ticket costs – though educating drivers about parking laws is proving effective.

  • What do you think of the new Government proposals on parking levies from traffic wardens?

The principle of the proposals seems very positive and could be a major benefit to our group, especially if a fine could be avoided. A more flexible and transparent appeals process would also be of benefit. With tens of millions of pounds of council profit at stake I remain a little sceptical.

  • Name your greatest career achievement

Winning last year’s Fleet News Fleet of the Year Award was great. It reflected the huge effort that has been put in by everyone here, from the board to the drivers.

  • Your most embarrassing career moment?

I managed to delete all our vehicles from the congestion charge scheme by mistake – it could have been costly.

  • Which part of fleet management do you spend most time on?

Probably fleet utilisation and cost management.
