A EUROPEAN Union road safety group has highlighted roads across Europe which it says need significant remedial works to stop them being accident blackspots.

It has published eight digital maps for Britain, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands, marking the dangerous roads in black.

The European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) claims that on these roads, the risk of a fatal or serious injury collision is 10 times that of the safest roads.

There are five roads identified in Britain: the A99 between Wick and Latheron, Caithness; the A682 north of Burnley; the A640 east of Manchester; the A537 east of Macclesfield; and the A54 west of Buxton.

EuroRAP’s report calls on highways authorities to repaint road markings, build safety fencing and make other improvements.
