Funding for global positioning

The European Commission has asked for permission to spend E3.4 billion on getting Galileo, Europe’s global positioning satellite, into orbit.

The huge price tag, which Europe’s taxpayers would have to foot, follows the failure of negotiations with prospective private contractors who would have shared costs.

Galileo is designed to offer more accurate navigation services than its American competitor, GPS.
