GM UK Fleet has joined forces with Millbrook Proving Ground and Bedfordshire Police to back a charity driving challenge aimed at raising leukaemia awareness in support of PC Steve Mead.

PC Mead, 22, a constable on the Bedfordshire force, has been diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukaemia, a particularly aggressive and acute form of the disease, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Addenbrookes Hospital.

A special “Le Mead” 24-hour Le Mans-style driving challenge has been organised at Millbrook Proving Ground on Saturday, December 8, followed by a charity dinner and fund raising auction.

The challenge is to complete 1,800 miles in 24 hours around the test circuit at Millbrook and will go on into Sunday, December 9, when professional drivers will also give demonstrations of driving high performance cars around the handling circuit.

Companies and fleet operators can show their support for the event by donating prizes for the charity auction or by buying tables of 10 at the dinner at a cost of £550 or £60 per head in the Millbrook Concept Centre on Saturday night.

Maurice Howkins, GM UK fleet sales director, said: “We, along with Millbrook and Beds Police, have given this event our support and we’d like as many people as possible to do the same, to help raise money and awareness for Leukaemia Research.”

Those that would like to make a financial donation to Leukaemia Research can do so by accessing the website www.justgiving.com/lemead.
