Careers: how are you settling in?

David Smith, managing director, Continental Tyre Group

  • What was your first day like?

As I came from within the company there was no need to get to know people or try to create the right first impression.

  • What challenges have you faced in your new job?

One big challenge has been to gain acceptance as the MD rather than the financial director.

  • What are you working on at the moment?

Our financial year runs from January to December so the whole company is busy working on the plan for next year.

  • What are your priorities for the coming year?

One in four cars drive off the European production line on Continental tyres. We need to make sure this is carried through in the replacement market.

  • Describe a typical day

No day is typical. On the whole, leaving home early and getting home late.

  • How do you relax at the end of the day?

Go to the gym, spend some quality time with my family, watch some TV and try to get enough sleep to get me through the next day.
