Fiat revives performance brand

FIAT will reveal the Grande Punto as its first model to join its new Abarth sporting range at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

The Grande Punto Abarth will fill a whole in the market for Fiat, which previously had no model competitors for performance rivals like the Fiesta ST, Vauxhall Corsa VXR and Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Fiat will also be developing Abarth styling packs for other Fiat models. Promotion of merchandise and clothing lines will also be a key element in the company’s plans for the sporting brand.

The Grande Punto Abarth is equipped with a 1.4 Turbo petrol engine that delivers 150bhp at 5,500rpm. Performance can be boosted with a Sport mode button, as well as an aftermarket booster kit, which push power output up to 180bhp.

Prices and a launch date are yet to be announced. Stay tuned for coverage of the Geneva Motor Show next week.
