Mike Thomas, fleet manager Dyfed Powys Police

  • How many vehicles are you responsible for and how are they funded?

We have a total of 405 vehicles on the fleet, all of which are purchased outright. In the main they are bought new, via the Home Office Framework Contracts.

  • What is your fleet experience?

I have been doing this role for 10 years. Prior to this I was a police officer in the Dyfed Powys force. A significant part of my police service was spent on mobile patrol duties and traffic management. It has been a huge learning curve from being a vehicle user to a fleet manager.

  • What motivates you in a morning?

It is always a challenge being a police fleet manager. The unexpected demands on me are exciting. In the main, I am able to resolve most problems that arise, mainly due to 45 years’ experience in the police.

  • If you weren’t working in fleet what would your dream job be?

I took up playing golf in my late 40s. Looking back, I wish I had started playing when younger. My dream job would be a professional golfer, travelling the world.
