A newly-developed turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine joins Audi’s A3 line-up this week, offering more power and lower emissions than the unit it replaces.

The 1.4 TFSI delivers 125bhp – 10bhp more than the 1.6-litre FSI engine it replaces.

Available in both three-door and Sportback bodystyles, the 1.4 TFSI returns 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and emits 154g/km of CO2, compared with 42.8mpg and 158g/km for the 1.6 FSI.

As a result, the TFSI engine drops the A3 down a benefit-in-kind tax bracket.

Prices start at £16,365 – a £160 premium over the old 1.6 FSI.
