The van dubbed 'the backbone of Britain' is also the most reliable on the market, according to this year's FN50 reliability survey.

Analysis of more than 100,000 vans has revealed that the Ford Transit is the most reliable van operated by Britain's fleets, while Ford has also taken top spot in the manufacturer reliability stakes.

Ford achieved double-top in the model reliability table as the Ford Transit Connect took second place, with the Vauxhall Astravan third and the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Toyota Hiace sharing fourth place to make up the top five.

Manufacturers making up the top five cover some of the most popular brands operated by fleets, with Mercedes-Benz in second place, Vauxhall in third, Volkswagen in fourth and Toyota in fifth.

Only multi-marque leasing companies were included in the survey, covering the most reliable vans, according to the number of breakdowns per 100 of each vehicle model on the fleet.

Points were awarded according to the number of times brands or models appeared in the tables, supplied by the leasing firms and for the position in which they were placed.

The FN50 supplement is published with this week's Fleet News.
