Almost half of motorists don’t know how to change a tyre, a quarter are unable to adjust tyre pressure and 25% don’t know how to top up their car’s oil.

The research, carried out for the British International Motor Show, also discovered that a third of motorists do not know where their car’s dipstick is and 25% do not know the difference between the windscreen washer and the radiator cap.

“It’s amazing how many people can’t manage even the most basic maintenance – changing a tyre and checking the oil are fundamental things you need to know,” said Vicki Butler-Henderson.

The research also found that 30% of motorists will flirt with traffic wardens in an attempt to avoid getting a ticket.
