Trevor Patchitt, transport manager, Erewash Borough Council

Describe your fleet
We run a fleet of 60 commercial vehicles and 250 items of plant and equipment.

How did you get into the fleet industry?
I have worked in the transport industry continuously for 43 years since leaving school, when I served an apprenticeship as a diesel fitter. Eventually I found my way into fleet.

What is your favourite aspect of the role?
The diversity of the work, as well as being lucky enough to work with some of the best mechanics and drivers in the business.

And your least favourite?
Having to enforce discipline into my drivers is the most unpleasant side of the job.

What are you working on at the moment?
Among other projects, I am working on an audit of the fleet and updating the risk assessments for our vehicle workshops.

How do you relax at weekends?
In my spare time I play the guitar, paint pictures and work on setting up a transport management consultancy.
