News in brief

Size matters
Environmentally-aware car buyers are willing to pay a premium of up to 30% for zero emission driving, according to Liberty Electric Cars. However, 45% said that they would not downsize to a small city car with less performance, in order to go green.

Zenith profits
Zenith Vehicle Contracts boosted its profits by 26% to £5.3m in the 12 months to March 31. Turnover rose by 27% to £83m. Its fleet size grew to just under 19,000 vehicles during the year.

Green rock
Rock FM has vowed to lead the way when it comes to eco-efficiency after it took delivery of four branded mopeds, loaned to the station by The Rocket Centre.

Driver training
The European Parliament has called on EU countries to boost driver training. This complements moves by the UK Government to introduce a culture of ‘lifelong learning’ for at-work drivers. MEPs backed a report saying accident simulation training was vital, because “road accident fatalities can be reduced by actively employing accident prevention techniques”.

Cheaper fuel
Heads of EU governments have cleared the way for a temporary reduction in excise duties on petrol and diesel to fight rising prices. A communiqué following an EU summit in Brussels said: “Measures can be considered to alleviate
the impact of higher oil and gas prices on the poorer sections of the population.”
