EU pedestrian safety rules introduced

A package of design rules for new vehicles aimed at improving pedestrian safety has been approved by EU ministers.

The rules will come into force from January 2011, and immediately for vehicles over 2.5 tonnes.

The standards insist on brake assist systems and other safety considerations, such as bumper design.
