Vauxhall will launch its first electric car – the Ampera – in the UK in 2012, it was announced this morning at the Geneva Motor Show.
The five-door hatchback is powered by electricity at all times, unlike hybrid vehicles which use a combination of petrol power and electricity. The Ampera uses an on-board engine to recharge the model’s batteries.
The Ampera will run on electricity for up to 40 miles, although that is extended to around 300 miles when the on-board engine is used as a generator. It can also be plugged in to a household socket to recharge.
