Skanska UK, part of one of the world’s leading project development and construction groups has made a massive reduction in its fleet costs.

The company has seen a reduction in annualised accident rates of 59%in the commercial vehicle fleet over a two year period, as a result of focusing on those who drive for work.

Not only has this improved the safety of its employees, but it has also resulted in crash costs being reduced by £250,000.
Now, in a bid to share its know-how with other businesses it has become the latest Driving for Better Business champion.

The Skanska fleet consists of more than 1,500 company cars and 1,000 commercial vehicles. Some 500 grey fleet – employee owned vehicle – drivers are also required to conform to the company’s driving for work policies.

Highlighting the company’s approach to managing those who drive for work, Dale Turner, director of procurement and Supply Chain, said the aim was to create a culture of care and concern across the whole of Skanska.

He continued: “Our goal is zero accidents – that’s one of our company values. Our Injury-Free Environment programme is designed to make sure we all look out for each other and get to go home safely at the end of the day. Improving how our employees drive will make the roads safer for everyone else too.

“We operate a large fleet and recognise that there are significant risks associated with this. We also recognise that we have a responsibility to manage the risks to our drivers, other drivers and all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

“We are delighted that our work has been recognised by the campaign. We will continue to improve our safety record and look forward to being active champions for Driving for Better Business.”
