Brake, the road safety charity, is running its first online training course next week - to help companies improve the safety of their drivers when out on the road.

For the first time in 2014, Brake's Pledge training, sponsored by ARI Fleet UK, will be run as a series of online webinars to give managers and driver trainers the training and tools they need to make sure at-work drivers and other road users are safe.

In Great Britain, at least 10 people are killed each week and 100 seriously injured in crashes involving people driving for work. Brake's Pledge training aims to combat this carnage by appealing to people who drive for work to follow six simple steps to protect themselves and other road users.

This essential training course offers practical tools and resources to enable participants to pass on effective and engaging safe driving messages to people who drive for work. Attendees will also hear from a company that has successfully embedded the Pledge within their business; helping them to improve road safety while maintaining high levels of productivity.

The webinars are delivered by an experienced, qualified trainer from Brake. Attendees will learn how to run discussion based workshops with their drivers on six core principles of safe driving:

  • Slow - within speed limits
  • Sober - free from alcohol or drugs
  • Sharp - not tired, ill or with poor eyesight
  • Silent - phone off and out of reach
  • Secure - belted up in a safe vehicle
  • Sustainable - only when you have to

Attendees will be provided with access to interactive learning materials through Brake Professional's website www.brakepro.org. These tools are designed to be used within the workplace to support internal road risk management policies and procedures.

Forthcoming Pledge webinars:

  • Thursday 19 June 2014
  • Wednesday 17 September 2014
  • Tuesday 2 December 2014

The first course is free to all to attend.

Ellie Pearson, senior professional engagement officer at Brake, said: "People who drive for work are an especially high-risk group on our roads and therefore it is incredibly important that we all make sure they are safe. We are delighted that our Pledge training is now being run through online webinars - making it even easier for drivers from all over the world to attend from the comfort of their own office. I would encourage any business to get involved with these courses, which are free to everyone."

Keith Allen, ARI Fleet UK managing director added: "We are delighted to be sponsoring Brake in 2014. Brake has a long history of promoting road safety and the great work they have achieved to date should be applauded. As a fleet management provider, ARI Fleet UK understands the importance of promoting road safety and mitigating risk, with the aim of reducing fatalities through increasing compliance. These objectives form part of our own core values as a global business and through this sponsorship opportunity we hope to enable Brake to continue this great work and help reduce risk on our roads."
