THE Government has announced a fundamental review of transport policy to be published in a White Paper next spring. The fact that it will be a White Paper, rather than a Green Paper, underlines the Government's commitment to deliver an integrated transport system.

Its remit to investigate key areas of transport and their impact on the environment and the economy explains the reasons behind the structure of the new Government, with the transport department answering to the umbrella Department of the Environment.

The UK has pledged to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2010, and half the cuts will have to come from transport, currently the fastest rising sector for emissions.
