THE Confederation of British Industry has listed more than 50 'priority transport projects' to help get Britain moving. The list was unveiled at the CBI's annual national conference on Tuesday following nominations by CBI regional directors after consultation with members.

CBI director general Digby Jones said: 'There is so much good work going on but recent events have shown our transport system is close to breaking point. Much of this is due to under-investment and unacceptable delay in delivering improvements. Putting things right is a major challenge.'

Improvements listed include: modernisation of London Underground, infrastructure and rolling stock improvements to London commuter rail routes, infrastructure, vehicle, service and technology improvements to the London bus network; widening of the M25 between junctions 12 and 15, widening of the M4 between junctions 4 and 9, development of terminal five at Heathrow Airport, improvements to the M27 around Southampton, widening of the A14 M1/A1 link, construction of the Birmingham Northern relief Road, widening of the M6 between junctions 11A and 19, improvements to the M1 between junctions 21 and 28, improvements to the West Midlands 'motorway box' around the M6/M5/M42; upgrades to the Trans-Pennine Rail Link, upgrades to both the west and east coast main rail lines, completion of the M74 northern extension, upgrade of the M8, completion of the M80, building of the M4 relief motorway around Newport, and widespread improvements throughout Northern Ireland including traffic management improvements to the Westlink linking the M1 and M2 Belfast.
