Global Telematics was formed in 1997 as a joint venture between European electronic giant Thales and European Telecom.

In August this year, Thales became the sole shareholder, saying the acquisition of European Telecom's 50% was in line with its 'global strategy in developing navigation and positioning technology and services'.

Through its main brand, called Orchid, Global Telematics is a supplier of telematics solutions and services with offices in the UK, South Africa and Australia.

Earlier this year, the company announced the 100th order in the UK for its orchidtrak.com service since its launch in June 2000.

In addition, worldwide transport and logistics provider Ryder fitted the company's Orchid telematics vehicle tracking solution in a pilot programme for its rental and contract hire fleet vehicles.

The company's other global customers include Avis, Hewlett-Packard, ParcelForce Worldwide, Express Logistics, Chubb and Dart Group. (December 2001)
