COMPANY car drivers in the capital will pay more heavily for breaking parking regulations in future, under proposals for a 50% increase in fines in London.

The Association of London Government is consulting on the massive increase to ensure fines are large enough to discourage drivers from breaking parking rules, such as staying at meters longer than they have paid for.

Under the proposals, drivers in central London would be hit with a penalty charge of £120, up from £80. In less central areas, the cost would rise from £60 to £80 and in outer areas, the charge would jump from £40 to £60. In each case there would be a 50% discount for prompt payment. Other charges would also increase, with the clamp release fee rising from £45 to £50, while release from the pound would cost £136, up from £125.

Storage charges would rise from £15 a day to £16 a day. But the disposal fee would remain at £60.

The Association of London Government is inviting comments on the proposed charges, which must be received before 5pm on October 18.
