BMW drivers from this month will be offered wireless voice-controlled in-car telephone modules as an optional extra on the X5, 3-series and 5-series.

The technology is the result of a partnership between German car manufacturer and technology company Visteon.

The companies have announced plans to work together to produce other 'innovative electronic technologies' for passenger cars.

Describing the in-car voice-controlled system, Visteon said it would allow BMW drivers the wireless and hands-free use of mobile phones.

The company added: 'The hands-free system, featured mainly in telecommunications products until now, integrates the benefits of Bluetooth wireless technology with Visteon's Voice Technology and applies it to automotive applications.'
