    Volvo S40 1.6/1.6D

ENTRY-level versions of the S40 have arrived, with a choice of a 100bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine or 110bhp 1.6-litre diesel. The diesel promises exceptionally low fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Smart styling and a nifty, high-quality interior appeal and these versions will make the Volvo brand more accessible to drivers after a sleek semi-premium saloon. V50 estates don’t get the 1.6 engines.

    BMW 3-series

THE outgoing 3-series will be a tough act to follow and its gradual replacement will begin in March with the attractive new saloon. The styling of the new car is less controversial than some recent BMWs and the new car is larger and roomier. BMW’s iDrive control system is not universally liked, so BMW is not fitting it as standard. Run-flat tyres are standard, though, improving safety and packaging.
