MORE than 1,400 motorists have signed up to a new speed awareness course as an alternative to receiving penalty points on their licences.

The scheme, launched seven weeks ago and run by driver training group DriveTech, is an initiative by Northumbria Police and 95% of drivers caught speeding in the area have opted to attend.
