THE continued increase of greenhouse gas emissions could either bring about catastrophic results or provide some big opportunities for the fleet business, a leading scientist has claimed.

In a presentation to the Acfo AGM, Dr John Murlis of the CarbonNeutral Company described how a one metre rise in sea level could leave London in a ‘precarious position’.

He said: ‘Right now people at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) are asking questions like: ‘should we build a wall around London or move it?’

But Murlis also told the conference that the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions by 60% has a positive side.

He said: ‘It will lead to a faster turnover of fleets as greener cars are introduced. Also there will be new carbon aware businesses created.

‘Companies that understand the agenda will have a competitive edge and many will enjoy working with authorities to set the agenda.’
