A DOZEN Mitsubishi L200s are being used by beach rescue teams as part of a new fleet deal.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has initially taken on 12 L200 4Work double-cab pick-ups but expects to operate the vehicles at 36 beaches in the south and south-west of England over the next two years.

Eventually, it expects to replace its entire 62-strong fleet around the UK with L200s.

RNLI transport manager David Tidman said: ‘When we considered all the things we needed from a vehicle, the L200 came out on top. It needs to be four-wheel drive as it will operate almost entirely on sand, have excellent load-carrying and towing capabilities and ultimately, be reliable.’
