CHUCK Ives, head of fleet, Network Rail

  • How many vehicles are you responsible for and how are they funded?

Network Rail has a fleet of more than 8,000 vehicles operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, from the tip of Cornwall up to the last train buffers in Thurso in Scotland. The vehicles are funded by contract lease from a variety of companies.

  • What is your career background?

I am an experienced transport professional with more than 30 years in the management of vehicles and the provision of transport solutions to a number of large organisations.

  • Have you ever had a really bad day at work?

Not really. As one of life’s eternal optimists, even on the blackest day there is always something positive that comes from it, be it the right results or experience gained.

  • What makes you smile at work?

Wind – according to my team.

  • Do you have any hobbies?

My job is my hobby, but when not at work I go fishing, which is an absolute antidote to the hectic life and work style we lead.
