Safety snub for sign plan

A plan to impose mandatory safety standards on the design and signing of international road routes within Europe has been abandoned.

The European Parliament said the guidelines should be optional rather than mandatory.

The news comes despite the fact that 43,000 people died in road accidents in the EU in 2007, up from 39,200 in 2006.
