OnStar, a subsidiary of General Motors, and Telefónica have reached an agreement by which Telefónica will provide M2M connectivity to OnStar-equipped General Motors vehicles in its future expansion to markets outside of the United States, Canada and China.

OnStar will rely on Telefónica's international GSM mobile standard network and its M2M automotive expertise to offer key services such as automatic crash notification, emergency services, turn-by-turn navigation, diagnostics, remote mobile connectivity and more.

“We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with OnStar, which is without doubt market leader in connected services for the automotive industry. Our global M2M offering as well as our own experience in the sector allows us to provide a top quality M2M service. This is a long term agreement and we will continue working so that both parties can benefit further," said Carlos Morales, Global M2M director at Telefónica Digital.

The initial agreement, the length of which was undisclosed, focuses on offering current OnStar services. The agreement has the potential over time to include the development and creation of future offerings between the two companies.
